is VIC ?
To provide a better
information service to Research and Development sectors,
ICICI Knowledge Park has set up a unique facility -
Virtual Information Centre (VIC). VIC links to digital
resources of Member Partners. It also facilitates widespread
library and literature search facilities. A web interface
for virtual meetings, discussions and sharing of ideas
is planned.
VIC
has been supported by funds, commitment and involvement
from National
Information System for Science and Technology (NISSAT)
of Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research, Government of India. The two-year
Project was monitored by a Project
Review Committee of eminent
Scientists representing the User Community. Establishment
of VIC was completed in March 2004.
Vision:
To act as an electronic
platform for fast and reliable access to Information
and interaction among industry, academia and public
research institutions in Science and technology.
Objectives:

To
provide a Gateway to existing Information Centers.

To
provide fast and reliable access to national and
International S&T information and databases.
-
To
develop an interface between Park tenants and member
organizations for sharing of resources and exchange
of ideas.

To
strengthen the resource base available in the country.
Thrust areas in initial
stages shall be: Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals,
Chemicals, New Materials, IT/Telecom.
Info-Services:
VIC offers the following Information services to its
clients
- Document Delivery: VIC has entered into working relationship
with libraries of Member Partners and other institutions
for procuring and delivering documents needed by
registered users of VIC. Access to Online Public
Access Catalogs of several libraries, paid membership
in Libraries and Library Networks (for example -Membership
in British
Library, DELNET,
FITT/IITD)
help VIC perform this service effectively.
- Translation Services: VIC can provide translation of Technical
documents. It is entering into tie-ups with a number
of Translation Agencies. A database of translators
has been developed as a tool for the S&T community.

Services
- Information Search
and Retrieval: Several
CDROM based databases are procured and made available
for in-house use on the LAN of IKP for its resident
companies. Other registered Users can search them
as well. Both ad-hoc reports as well as regular
SDI outputs can be provided.
- Access to External databases: VIC
provides seamless access to a number of external
databases vendors. STN
and Dialog
are examples.
- Training Programs: It is essential for scientists
to keep themselves abreast of newer developments
in information sources that are pouring in day by
day. VIC conducts periodically seminars and training
courses to meet this need.
